PM: EU Ambassador threatening Georgians with civil war and poverty is unthinkable, it shows he is in difficult situation

When the EU Ambassador threatens the Georgian people with civil war and impoverishment, it is simply unthinkable, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists.

According to Kobakhidze, the EU Ambassador is in a “tragic situation” when he is allegedly forced to make such statements.

“It is difficult for me even to assess this statement. When the EU Ambassador threatens the Georgian people with civil war and impoverishment, it is simply unthinkable. It is impossible to assess this. I would like to emphasize once again that the Ambassador, unfortunately, is in a tragic situation when he has to make such threats against the Georgian people. This in itself reflects his difficult situation,” Kobakhidze said.

The Prime Minister further stated that the Ambassador’s remarks amount to a direct threat and that it would be appropriate to summon him to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The Ambassador said that in the near future it will be decided in which direction events in the country will develop. According to him, one direction is the European path, and the other is civil war and impoverishment of the population.

When the EU Ambassador speaks in this way, it is beyond evaluation—it is truly tragic. He presents the situation as a choice between two paths: the European path, or civil war and impoverishment. This is how he threatens the Georgian people. This is a direct threat, and it would be appropriate to summon him to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs over this.

Such a serious statement cannot be justified by anything else when it implies a direct threat of civil war and impoverishment. This is unacceptable.

One must also ask how the country is being framed in such terms, and how such a narrative is being constructed. There have been repeated attempts in recent years to influence internal political processes and encourage destabilization.

Ahead of the parliamentary elections, the Ambassador even called on the Georgian people to bring a previous political force back to power. In doing so, he was effectively pushing the country toward its difficult past.

It is tragic when an EU Ambassador speaks in this way and presents civil war and impoverishment as an alternative for Georgia,” Kobakhidze stated.

Several Georgian media outlets reported a statement made by the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski, at an event held at the European External Action Service in Brussels.

According to those reports, Herczynski stated that “Georgia is at a crossroads,” adding that the country’s future is not yet determined and that upcoming developments would show whether Georgia continues on the path of European democratic values or risks moving away from them.

He also noted: “We must not allow Georgia and the wonderful, warm, hospitable Georgian people to return to the dark times of violence, civil war, poverty, hardship, and corruption.”
