Philharmonic building to undergo complete renovation

Starring Georgia is beginning a complete renovation and technical upgrade for the Philharmonic building.

According to Starring Georgia’s information, this decision was taken considering the building’s dire condition.

“The project is being implemented with support from the Administration of the Government of Georgia, the Ministry of Culture of Georgia, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Georgia and the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia. For years, the concert hall has been outdated, the infrastructure worn out, and it does not meet the essential requirements for a modern concert space.

Tbilisi’s main concert hall lacks the resources to host events to a high standard and, given existing challenges, to fulfil its historic function. Following completion of the works, the capital will regain a main concert space meeting contemporary standards, which will once again fulfil the function of Tbilisi’s main cultural centre. The building’s renovation implies a significant expansion of its functional purpose.

Considering its status as a cultural monument, the building’s authentic appearance will be preserved, while the interior will be refurbished and the technical systems entirely modernised. The Philharmonic will be equipped with the latest technology, high-quality sound and lighting systems, which will enable us to host both local and international events. The project’s aim is for the Philharmonic to become a contemporary arts accelerator that determines the rhythm of the city’s cultural life.

The building’s administrative section will house: a sound recording studio, a workshop for stage designers, a school for young people interested in creative industries, an experimental stage, a social space and a Philharmonic museum. The project will promote the development of the entertainment industry in Georgia. This will help artists in self-realisation and professional growth, increase creative diversity in the country and create a platform for both local and international events,” states Starring Georgia’s information.

According to Starring Georgia, simultaneously, to preserve the Philharmonic’s cultural heritage and pass its history on to new generations, a project is beginning, Philharmonic Frames of Time, within which the registration and digitisation of valuable audio, video, photo and documentary materials remaining in the building is already underway.

“Within the project’s framework, significant historical memories will be preserved, and the emotional connection of the younger generation with the Philharmonic, an enduring cultural symbol that has for decades stood as the heart of Georgia’s musical life, will be strengthened.

It should be noted that the Philharmonic building became part of Starring Georgia’s ecosystem in 2024. In this regard, creating an inclusive environment and increasing accessibility to existing services and spaces is important. The renovated Philharmonic will be adapted for people with disabilities.

Starring Georgia has been successfully operating for three years now. This team has created historic precedents in the country and put Georgia on the world entertainment industry map. During this time, concerts organised by them have been attended by more than 200,000 spectators. More than 40,000 foreign tourists have come to the country, and Georgia has hosted such world-class artists as Guns N’ Roses, Bruno Mars, Imagine Dragons, Justin Timberlake, Scorpions, The Killers and others,” notes Starring Georgia’s information.
