People's Power: U.S. national security strategy implies no NATO enlargement, questions commitment to Alliance
“By publishing the U.S. National Security Strategy, America has made it clear that it not only has no intention of enlarging NATO but is also re-evaluating its future involvement in the alliance altogether,” said MP Guram Macharashvili, Executive Secretary of the People’s Power Party.
According to Macharashvili, this stance is also reflected in the positions of European countries themselves.
“This means that the United States, at least, is unlikely to pursue NATO enlargement, as it faces its own global challenges. Consequently, we must face reality and act in a way that serves Georgia’s national interests. Our interests are best served by maintaining a pragmatic approach, one that continues the policy of de-occupation while fostering relations with all partners who value Georgia, including major powers like China. We also aim to cultivate strong, pragmatic ties with our neighbours. Such an approach will help Georgia preserve peace, bolster its economy, and navigate out of the current crisis,” Macharashvili explained.
The U.S. National Security Strategy 2025, published by the Trump administration on the official White House website, reads that the strategic priority becomes “ending the perception, and preventing the reality, of NATO as a perpetually expanding alliance.”
