“The fact that there has been a huge commotion over the pardon is purely a political game by the opposition,” said Eka Sepiashvili, International Relations Secretary of the People’s Power Party.

Eka Sepiashvili told reporters that she found it inconceivable that those people who committed grave crimes against the state and people, and do not recognise the legitimacy of state institutions, expect to be pardoned.

“I don’t understand, and it is incomprehensible why those people who committed serious crimes against their state and people and did not repent had any expectation of pardon. On the contrary, they proudly declare that they do not repent, did the right thing and package their crimes under imaginary political motives. The crimes are mostly under the criminal code or administrative offences, in some cases.

The fact that there has been a huge commotion over the pardon is purely a political game by the opposition lead to no result. It is not based on real, objective, legal assumptions and arguments. If they believe that the state is illegitimate and run by illegitimate institutions, and do not recognise the president, then why do they demand a pardon from him and the use of the power that is granted to our president? Their attitude is inconceivable and absurd,” she said.

Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili pardoned 159 convicted persons on the occasion of the Epiphany, January 19.
