“The conclusion of the Pricing Commission did not respond to the challenges that the government announced at the end of last year,” said Guram Macharashvili, Executive Secretary of the People’s Power party.

According to Machavariani, the opinion does not feature a plan on how to reduce consumer prices or an enforcement mechanism.

“The parliament is a body which controls the government and the tasks and terms given to the executive authorities. This is why we supported the conclusion. Since the commission was interim instead of fact-finding, the bureau will decide whether to put it for a vote or not. In the process of work, we saw the same regarding medicines, not only in healthy competition, but that one and the same group has a clinic, health insurance and there will be no healthy competition. It is the same with food products when the government mentioned cartel deals and we saw it at the commission meetings.

The commission revealed many things, and the summarizing speech of the chairman included many indicators of the problems facing us, and we welcome this.

But if there is no enforcement mechanism, it will remain at the level of desire; this is the main problem. This conclusion should contain instructions for the executive branch. Let the parliament propose a plan, terms and means for the problem resolution, since only executive authorities possess the leverage to address them,” he said.
