People's Power Macharashvili calls for urgent action on price regulation following PM's statement
“The Prime Minister’s statement on price regulation was both excellent and timely, and now it is far more important that all of this is reflected in practice,” stated MP Guram Macharashvili, Executive Secretary of the People’s Power Party.
According to Macharashvili, People’s Power will engage in the parliamentary investigative commission on the matter of price regulation.
“Beyond the fact that, naturally, an investigative commission will be established in Georgia’s Parliament regarding this issue, and, of course, we as well, the parliamentary opposition, will engage in this commission, what matters most is that the public properly understands what this is about.
We recall how, during a period of political decline for the United National Movement and its affiliates, they openly admitted that their strategy was to block main roads and obstruct every institution in an attempt to bring Georgia’s economy to collapse. They were transparent about this, and one of the leaders of the United National Movement explicitly stated at a briefing that they were communicating with their foreign backers about deliberately causing as much harm as possible, including to Georgia’s economy, to incite unrest and provoke people to take to the streets. These are publicly acknowledged statements made by them.
So, the price regulation is precisely aimed at addressing that issue. We are all too aware that, regrettably, some companies and individuals are staunch supporters of the United National Movement across numerous associations and economic sectors. For them, this situation is profitable in two ways: firstly, because the same products, which are much cheaper in Europe, are sold at higher prices in Georgia. This allows them to line their pockets and then use these profits to fund radical actions. Secondly, they tell the public, ‘Look at what the government is doing when prices are so high in Georgia.’ They benefit in both ways,” explained Guram Macharashvili.
As Macharashvili pointed out, the matter of price regulation will be addressed by the parliamentary commission alongside investigative agencies.
“This will be regulated very strictly, incidentally, not only by those investigative agencies that have already engaged in this process, but also by the parliamentary commission. Everyone will absolutely be held accountable for the fact that the pockets of companies that directly harm Georgia must not be lined at the expense of Georgian society. How is it possible that prices for those products are far lower in leading European countries than they are in Georgia? This is precisely a targeted process aimed at damaging Georgia, and this will necessarily be addressed both by the relevant agencies and by the investigative commission established in Parliament,” declared Macharashvili.
