Parliament Speaker: Georgians have long sought support in foreign capitals from Moscow to The Hague and Brussels
“Eka Gigauri and similar opposition figures are attempting to secure power on the instructions of foreign nations,” said the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.
Papuashvili was asked to comment on the speech made by Eka Gigauri, the director of Transparency International Georgia, during the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Dutch Parliament.
According to the Speaker, this constitutes a form of lustration of groups acting in foreign interests.
“I remind you that Eka Gigauri is the head of an organisation registered in Estonia, and with this, they have effectively disqualified themselves. Today, they are formally groups operating in the interests of a foreign country. There is nothing new in this; anyone who has thoroughly studied Georgia’s history will recognise that this has always been the case.
Georgians have long sought support in the capitals of various countries and empires in their pursuit of power at home. In recent history, it was the Soviet Union; back then, they flocked to Moscow to pursue various positions. Today, for some, it is The Hague and Brussels. This is the clearest lustration of groups acting in the interests of a foreign country. That is how they clarify things for society,” Papuashvili stated.
