Parliament Speaker: From Red Army’s force to Kaja Kallas’s words - attempt to undermine our sovereignty

“In 1921, when the Red Army penetrated Georgia, they claimed to be there to assist the Georgian people and to act in their name, asserting that the then government of independent Georgia was not serving the interests of the Georgian nation and that help was needed,” the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, told journalists in response to the statement by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, in which she expressed support for the Georgian people but not for the Georgian government.

According to Papuashvili, what Kaja Kallas said amounts to a verbal abrogation of our sovereignty.

“This is how the Red Army entered Georgia with a spear and abolished our sovereignty, because it was not the will of the people that mattered, but the will of those who claimed to call themselves the people. They used this as an excuse to invade and dismantle our sovereignty with a spear.

Whether our sovereignty is abolished with a spear or with words, it makes no real difference for our statehood. What the EU High Representative said yesterday is equivalent to abolishing our sovereignty with a word.

Just as the Red Army did it by force, Kaja Kallas is now attempting to do so with words, to undermine our independence. She must choose: does she stand with the Georgian people, or with those who seek to erase our state? The Georgian people are a sovereign nation, and their support should be for them, not for those who aim to dismantle our state in their name.

This is a direct attack on Georgia’s independence by Brussels, stripping the Georgian people of their right to choose their own government. What does it mean when she says, ‘I support the people, not the government’? Whose government is this? It is the government elected by the Georgian people; that is democracy. Anyone who claims otherwise either does not understand what democracy is, or is actively pursuing a policy to abolish the sovereignty of other nations,” said Shalva Papuashvili.

As Papuashvili observed, this is not the first time that Kaja Kallas has voiced sentiments that are out of touch with reality.

“Unfortunately, this again highlights the immaturity of the EU’s foreign policy in the face of the challenges Europe faces. This is precisely what the White House refers to as the ‘Estonisation’ of the EU’s foreign policy, a shift from responsible diplomacy to reckless activism, which has brought the entire continent to the brink of disaster.

Had Europe demonstrated proper political maturity, there would be no war in Ukraine. This conflict could have been avoided, but due to their reckless activism, including that of the West as a whole, war became inevitable. It would not have happened if Europe and the West had pursued a responsible, strong, and clear policy,” Papuashvili stated.
