Parliament Speaker: Foreign Ministry has again done strong work at UN; UN resolution has more co-sponsors than before

“Significantly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has once again performed strongly at the United Nations; the resolution has more co-sponsors than it did previously, and 107 countries have voted in its favour,” said the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.

He also noted the importance of keeping the number of abstentions stable, ensuring it does not shift in the wrong direction.

“In and of itself, this once again demonstrates that international legal norms matter. And yet, regrettably, the hopes that Georgians have always placed in international law, in rules-based order, in the international system as a whole, are under strain today. We see that, unfortunately, the United Nations is failing to fulfil the role it ought to play in upholding international rules and resolving conflicts. And yet, on the other hand, the support that individual states have chosen to extend to this resolution shows that Georgia’s territorial integrity, its sovereignty, and the right of displaced persons to return home remain high on the international agenda,” Papuashvili stated.

The UN General Assembly adopted the resolution on the status of internally displaced persons and refugees from Georgia’s occupied regions by 107 votes.
