Parliament Speaker and Foreign Relations Committee Chair meet with South Korean Parliamentary Foreign Affairs delegation

Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili has met with Song Seog-jun, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, alongside members of the visiting parliamentary delegation. During the introductory meeting, both parties reviewed bilateral relations between the two nations.

According to the Parliament’s press service, the Korean delegation also held detailed talks with MP Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee.

“The delegation from the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea is visiting Georgia at the invitation of Nikoloz Samkharadze. The sides discussed bilateral relations between Georgia and South Korea, as well as avenues for deepening inter-parliamentary cooperation.

The discussion focused on expanding collaboration across political, trade, economic, cultural, educational, and innovation sectors. Both parties expressed optimism that a Bilateral Free Trade Agreement between Georgia and the Republic of Korea will be signed in the near future. The meetings also addressed the global security landscape, the ongoing war in Ukraine, Black Sea security, and conflicts across the Middle East, while underscoring the strategic imperative of the Middle Corridor.

Nikoloz Samkharadze briefed his counterparts on the complex situation in Georgia’s occupied territories, escalating threats originating from Russia, and the broader security environment surrounding the country. The parties further explored Georgia’s energy potential, including the Georgian government-planned hydroelectric power plant projects, highlighting prospects for Korean investment in the domestic energy sector.

Furthermore, Nikoloz Samkharadze formally requested that the National Assembly delegation consider introducing a visa-free regime for Georgian citizens visiting the Republic of Korea to boost bilateral tourism. The two parties agreed to establish annual reciprocal visits between the parliamentary delegations of Georgia and South Korea,” the press release confirmed.
