Parliament approves amendments to Law on Political Unions of Citizens
Parliament has reviewed and approved amendments to Georgia’s Organic Law on Political Unions of Citizens, employing expedited procedures to pass the legislation in a third reading with 80 votes in favour.
Irakli Kirtskhalia, the First Deputy Chairman of the Georgian Dream faction, introduced the legislative initiative at the session.
The amendments specify that political parties and individuals with declared electoral objectives will no longer be allowed to receive donations through lectures, seminars, or similar public events from legal entities registered in Georgia or abroad, as well as from other types of associations.
Furthermore, the legislative initiative mandates that any grants received from relevant foreign sources must have the explicit consent of the Government of Georgia or its authorized representative or body. Receiving grants without such consent will incur legal liability.
The Public Legal Entity Anti-Corruption Bureau will oversee the monitoring of grant receipts. According to Kirtskhalia, the regulations governing the receipt of grants will also apply to funds transferred free of charge, whether in monetary or in-kind form, that qualify as grants in nature.
