Parent of child with Duchenne: Working group to begin work with pharmaceutical companies on two DMD medications
“A decision was reached at today’s meeting with the Prime Minister to establish a working group that will work on securing specific medications, with active engagement to follow with pharmaceutical companies,” Zakro Gvishiani, the parent of a child with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, told the media following the meeting with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze at the Government Administration.
Gvishiani added that work to secure specific medications for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy begins today.
“Victory has been achieved in this noble and hard-fought struggle. I congratulate everyone who stood by us throughout this worthy cause. At today’s meeting, a decision was made to establish a working group to work on specific medications. There will be active engagement with pharmaceutical companies. Certain matters remain to be worked through. Taking into account the best possible conditions, the best interests of the children, and their individual health circumstances, a final decision on two of the medications will be reached in approximately two months. I am not in a position to name them specifically; this is an ongoing working process, and the process could be undermined if we do. At this stage, we will refrain from disclosing the names. Out of four medications under consideration, a final decision will be made on two,” Zakro Gvishiani explained.
For reference, a working group is to be established with the participation of the Georgian Ministry of Health and the parents of affected children, tasked with actively addressing the provision of specific medications for children living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
