Opposition representatives optimistic about negotiations

Georgia should demonstrate that it is a reliable partner. The opposition is ready to compromise. It has to show that it is rational and constructive, said Grigol Gegelia, a member of the opposition Lelo Party.

“If we fail to reach an agreement through mediation, Georgia’s international image and future will be damaged,” Gegelia claimed.

Sergo Chikhladze, a member of the Strategy Aghmashenebeli party, said the opposition expects rational compromise from the government.

He said the opposition is waiting for Christian Danielsson, the special envoy of the European Council President for the Georgian political crisis, to propose the document.

A member of the United National Movement (UNM) party, Salome Samadashvili, states all issues outlined in the negotiations plan of the European Council President Charles Michel are crucial.

“We believe the text that EU mediator proposes will be a good plan for rescuing Georgia’s future and democratic system. The document will require concessions from both sides. But it should also reflect the solutions to both sides over fundamental issues,” Samadashvili claimed.

EU special mediator Christian Danielsson will hold expanded consultations with all parties on Tuesday. He will put a compromised text on a negotiations table for all parties to agree and sign.

EU mediator returned to Tbilisi on Sunday to help the opposition and the government reach an agreement.
