Opposition Alliance sets six demands to be met for free and fair elections
The Opposition Alliance has outlined six demands for the holding of free and fair elections.
As a member of the Alliance, Tengo Tevzadze emphasised during a briefing that the suspension of politically motivated criminal prosecutions and the repeal of repressive legislation are essential prerequisites for holding fair elections.
“The Opposition Alliance has set itself the primary objective of replacing Georgian Dream, which must be achieved, above all, through free and fair elections. Before we can speak of fair elections, it is essential that political prisoners be released, that politically motivated criminal cases be dropped, and that the repressive laws be repealed; laws that have either dismantled or posed a very serious threat to democratic institutions: the critical media, political parties, civil society groups, and other instruments vital to democracy.
For free and fair elections to be held, six core demands must be met: the method by which the electoral administration is composed must be changed; it must be grounded entirely in the principle of parity, with one representative drawn from each party that crossed the threshold in the 2024 and 2020 elections; emigrants must be restored the right to vote and polling stations must be opened outside the country; the electoral roll must be made public and it must be possible to verify a voter’s participation in elections; specialist panels for adjudicating electoral disputes must be established within the courts; where elections are conducted using electronic technology, the necessity of auditing the machines and the voting day process must be stipulated; and the electoral roll must be opened so that verification of voter participation becomes possible,” Tevzadze declared.
