October 4 case: Nana Sander sentenced to seven years, Abo Naveriani and Anton Uber handed five-year prison terms
Four individuals, namely Nana Sander, Abo Naveriani, Anton Uber, and Mariam Mekantsishvili, have been found guilty over the events of October 4 involving an attempted storming of the Presidential Palace.
Following the judge’s ruling, Nana Sander was sentenced to seven years in prison, while Abo Naveriani and Anton Uber were each handed five-year custodial sentences. Mariam Mekantsishvili was ordered to pay a 5,000 GEL fine.
Anton Uber was sentenced in absentia as he remains a fugitive from justice.
Before the verdict, the defendants addressed the court with their final statements. They insisted they only attended the October 4 rally to protect Georgia’s European future, denying all charges.
A total of 12 individuals had been detained under this specific episode of the case. Eight of them entered guilty pleas and secured plea bargains, resulting in their immediate release from the courtroom.
Nana Sander was prosecuted on multiple counts under the Criminal Code of Georgia, including serious offences against public order and state security. Sander was charged under Part 1 of Article 225, which concerns the organisation of group violence and carries a sentencing range of six to nine years in prison. She also faced charges under Article 317, which outlaws public calls for the violent overthrow of state authorities or the alteration of Georgia’s constitutional order, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of nine years’ imprisonment.
Meanwhile, Abo Naveriani and Anton Uber were charged under Sub-paragraph ‘A’ of Part 2 of Articles 19-222, which covers the attempted seizure or blockade of strategic facilities of special importance in a group. They were further charged under Part 2 of Article 225 for direct participation in group violence.
Mariam Mekantsishvili faced prosecution under Article 226 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which pertains to the organisation of group actions that breach public order.
