Nika Gvaramia: Moldova-Romania unity is none of our business, surrendering Georgia’s sovereignty is non-negotiable

According to Nika Gvaramia, one of the leaders of the Ahali party, it is entirely up to Romania and Moldova to decide whether they wish to pursue unification.

A journalist asked Gvaramia: “The process of unification between Romania and Moldova has officially begun. The lower house of the Romanian Parliament has adopted a bill on the unification of Romania and Moldova. How do you assess this relinquishment of their sovereignty?”

“That does not mean it has officially begun. Generally speaking, this has been discussed for a very long time. They are one nation, divided since the creation of the Soviet Union, and it is their decision to make. As far as Georgia is concerned, this tells us nothing; Georgia is a country whose statehood does not extend beyond its borders.

Georgia must remain independent and restore its territorial integrity; let us return to the issue of so-called South Ossetia. The Romanian and Moldovan precedents will not help with that. South Ossetia is Georgia, and what the Romanians and Moldovans choose to do is simply none of our business,” Nika Gvaramia stated.

When asked a follow-up question regarding whether it is right to surrender sovereignty and merge with another country, Gvaramia replied:

“That is for the Romanian and Moldovan people to decide. For me, as a Georgian, surrendering Georgia’s sovereignty is absolutely unacceptable under any combination of circumstances or for any reason whatsoever.”
