New Tsiv-Gombori Protected Area established to boost ecotourism and biodiversity in Kakheti
A new conservation zone, the Tsiv-Gombori Protected Area, has been established in the Kakheti region. According to the Agency of Protected Areas, under the newly enacted law, the sanctuary spans 39,877 hectares across the municipalities of Sagarejo, Gurjaani, and Telavi.
The agency noted that the newly established territory comprises three distinct conservation categories: the Tsiv-Gombori National Park (21,761 hectares), the Sighnaghi Managed Nature Reserve (554 hectares), and the Tsiv-Gombori Protected Landscape (17,562 hectares). The management of the Tsiv-Gombori Protected Landscape will be overseen directly by the Gurjaani Municipality.
“The establishment of the Tsiv-Gombori Protected Area will significantly strengthen the network of conservation zones within the Kakheti region, while fostering the protection of unique natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and landscapes.
The creation of this new protected territory is also vital for preserving the region’s ecological balance and encouraging the development of sustainable ecotourism. This decision will boost the international promotion of Kakheti as an ecotourism destination and create additional opportunities for the local population in terms of employment and economic growth,” the statement from the Agency of Protected Areas read.
