NATO ships enter Georgian territorial waters

Georgian Coast Guard of the Border Police hosts Standing NATO Maritime Group TWO (SNMG2). NATO ships entered the territorial waters of Georgia on March 15.

The Maritime Group, led by Rear Admiral Manuel Aguirre Aldereguía, is composed of Spanish flagship Cristobal Colon, Romanian Regina Maria, Turkish Kemalreis and Bulgarian Smeli.

The visit aims to enhance interoperability between the naval forces of Georgia and NATO member and partner countries.

According to the Georgian Interior Ministry, the NATO ships will conduct joint exercises with the Georgian Coast Guard.

“Amid the coronavirus pandemic, this port call is a demonstration of the continued commitment of NATO to Georgia. NATO port calls to Georgian Black Sea ports are regular, which is one of the tangible results of NATO-Georgia cooperation in strengthening Black Sea security”, the ministry said in a statement.

NATO Maritime Group will leave the territorial waters of Georgia on March 18.
