National Guard marks 35th jubilee

The National Guard of the Georgian Defence Forces celebrated its 35th anniversary. Defence Minister Irakli Chikovani congratulated the soldiers on professional day and commended them for their service.

“The National Guard, with its proud history, is one of the most outstanding symbols of unwavering loyalty to the state. I would like to congratulate the National Guard on its anniversary and express special gratitude to all veteran personnel, who, through their hard work, knowledge, and perseverance over the years, have created a solid foundation for the further development of the Guard for future generations,” the Minister said.

Commander of the National Guard, General Roman Jokhadze, addressed military servicemen. The ceremony then continued with the awarding ceremony. Irakli Chikovani awarded Roman Jokhadze with White St. George Medal for National Guard development.

Deputy Defence Minister and Chief of Defence Forces General-Lieutenant Giorgi Matiashvili attended the ceremony.

The National Guard was established on December 20, 1990, based on the law adopted by the Supreme Council of Georgia. The Guard was the first military unit on the basis of which the Georgian Defense Forces were subsequently formed and developed.

“Today, the tasks of the Georgian National Guard include training and retraining the defense forces reserve, organizing combat exercises, supporting combat operations, conducting security operations, supporting the civic authorities in military and emergency situations,” the Defence Ministry said.
