MP Nikoloz Samkharadze meets with President of Foreign Relations and Defence Committee of Italian Senate
The Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, MP Nikoloz Samkharadze, is on an official visit to the Republic of Italy, accompanied by a delegation.
As part of the visit, he met with Maurizio Gaspari, President of the Foreign Relations and Defence Committee of the Italian Senate.
The discussions centred on the current bilateral relations between Georgia and Italy and the key areas for future cooperation. Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening parliamentary ties.
The conversation also addressed regional security challenges and ongoing conflicts, including Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and the situation surrounding Iran.
Nikoloz Samkharadze briefed his Italian counterpart on the challenging conditions in occupied Georgian regions and the threats emanating from Russia.
The meeting highlighted Georgia’s significant role in enhancing the EU’s energy security and maximising the potential of the Middle Corridor.
The parties also examined Georgia’s EU accession process, including some of the difficulties faced in negotiations with Brussels.
The significant role Italy can play in overcoming these challenges and in re-establishing an open dialogue between Georgia and the EU was emphasised.
The Georgian delegation informed the Italian senator about ongoing economic reforms and the country’s positive growth indicators.
In response, Italy reaffirmed its strong support for Georgia’s European integration efforts.
It was noted that Georgia is a vital partner for Italy and that Italy is committed to assisting Georgia in achieving its foreign policy objectives.
Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, is in Rome on an official visit, leading a delegation that includes Vakhtang Turnava, Head of the Friendship Group with the Italian Parliament, and Tornike Cheishvili, First Deputy Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee.
