MP Nikoloz Samkharadze highlights Georgia’s partnership with NATO PA and closer cooperation
“As you are aware, the Georgian delegation is a partner of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and we are participating in this event to strengthen the parliamentary ties between Georgia and NATO,” stated MP Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. He is attending the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s spring session in Vilnius alongside the Georgian Parliament’s permanent delegation.
According to Samkharadze, the main topics covered during the session were Russia’s ongoing hybrid and conventional military threats, and efforts to strengthen security on NATO’s eastern flank.
He also mentioned that the NATO Secretary General addressed the alliance’s upcoming plans.
“The Georgian parliamentary delegation is taking part in the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Vilnius. The session commenced two days ago and concludes today. Key issues on the agenda include Russia’s hybrid and conventional military threats, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the extension of compulsory military service in NATO member states, increased investment in military technologies and innovations, and overall efforts to bolster security on NATO’s eastern flank. Today, we also heard from the NATO Deputy Secretary General, who discussed future strategies, including the possibility of allocating up to 5% of GDP to defence spending. He emphasised that Ukraine has become a testing ground for military innovations and new technologies, leading to the development of one of the most formidable military forces. NATO must draw lessons from this ongoing struggle.
As you know, Georgia remains a partner of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and our participation in this event is aimed at bringing the parliamentary dimensions of Georgia and NATO even closer,” concluded Samkharadze.
