MP Mdinaradze - Legislative initiative on agreement will be submitted to parliament on Wednesday

“The legislative initiative on the agreement reached between the ruling party and the opposition on the electoral model will be submitted to the Parliament of Georgia on Wednesday,” Deputy Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Mamuka Mdinaradze briefed journalists.

As MP explained, the constitutional amendments will not be discussed at tomorrow’s sitting of the Bureau, as the relevant legislative initiative of the agreement should be prepared within two days.

“We have two days till Wednesday to send the legislative initiative of the agreement to Bureau after which appropriate procedures will kick-off. After Bureau, the legislative initiative will pass public hearings, votings and as a result, we will get a new constitutional provision that provides terms for this agreement,” Mdinaradze stressed.

MP said this agreement was “a victory for Georgian democracy and the Georgian Dream.” Mdinadardze thanked dialogue facilitators for their involvement as well.

The agreement on the electoral model between the government and the opposition has been reached earlier today.

As the dialogue facilitators, said in their statement, the agreement foresees an election system for 2020 based on 120 proportional mandates and 30 majoritarian mandates, a fair composition of election districts, a 1% threshold, and a cap recognizing that no single party that wins less than 40% of the votes should be able to get its own majority in the next parliament.
