MP Matikashvili: The sooner Peter Fischer leaves Georgia, the better for bilateral ties

“The sooner Peter Fischer concludes his activities in Georgia, the better it will be for Georgian-German relations. Hopefully, he will be replaced by a more prudent diplomat,” declared MP Davit Matikashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues.

In Matikashvili’s words, as time goes on, Fischer’s pronouncements grow ever more replete with brazen falsehoods, the passing off of his own wishes as reality, and undiplomatic statements that are wholly unbefitting of any diplomatic convention.

“It is welcome news that his activities in Georgia are drawing to a close. We have stated our position on more than one occasion, clearly and emphatically. What more could Georgia, the Georgian people, and the Georgian Parliament have done? European integration was enshrined in Article 78 of the Constitution. When we were drafting that provision, we could not have imagined the groundless accusations, the double standards and the attacks that now pour forth daily from the Euro-bureaucracy, one of whose most vocal mouthpieces, regrettably, is today German Ambassador to Georgia.

Society knows perfectly well from whence the coercion directed against our country originates, who it was that withheld candidate status from the Georgian people, who used that as a lever of pressure to change the government and party chosen by the Georgian people and to compel Georgians to take decisions they did not wish to take; and from where, and by virtue of what document, the decision not to open negotiations with Georgia is determined. Against this backdrop, the ambassador of a country whose own Foreign Ministry has still not updated its official records puts his hands over his eyes, places himself in a position that invites ridicule, lectures us on propriety and speaks to us of conspiracy theories. Let him answer a simple question: from whom does this assignment come, and why is he trying so very hard to damage Georgian-German relations?” declared Davit Matikashvili.
