MP Matikashvili: If eurobureaucrats dislike interference, they should reflect on their attempts to meddle in Georgia
“If Eurobureaucrats dislike interference in internal affairs, they should take a good look at their own behaviour and approach towards their partners, including Georgia. They will undoubtedly find that there have not just been one or two, but numerous attempts to meddle in our country’s internal affairs,” said MP Davit Matikashvili, a member of Georgian Dream.
He argued that the international order that prevailed after the end of the Second World War and the collapse of the Soviet Union no longer exists today.
“New rules of the game are being established among the major global players, including China. We see that, just yesterday, the European Union and the United States, traditionally united in a strategic partnership, have largely entered a confrontational stance. The criticisms aimed at Georgia’s efforts to develop strategic relations with China are entirely fabricated and unfounded. They themselves are seeking to forge closer ties with one of the world’s largest economies.
As for Russia, we have repeatedly heard European officials and former U.S. administrations call for isolating Russia, refusing negotiations with its leadership, and declaring them non-grata under all circumstances.
Today, however, the rhetoric is completely opposite. Donald Trump invited the Russian President to participate in the Peace Council, and the Presidents of France and Italy have spoken about the need to engage in dialogue with the Russian leadership. All of this makes perfect sense because if the goal is a peaceful end to the conflict, peace cannot be achieved without negotiations. If you do everything to prevent sitting at the negotiating table with the mediator, then your true intention is to prolong the war. In that case, you are actively supporting the war effort and do not genuinely seek peace,” Matikashvili stated.
