MP Makhashvili: EU claims of non-interference are laughable; Brussels seems to consider Georgia a pawn
“America’s remarks towards Brussels are entirely logical. The United States recognises that the EU is not the organisation it once was, one that stood firmly by America in resolving global issues. Therefore, its criticism is completely understandable,” MP Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on European Integration, told GPB First Channel.
According to Makhashvili, the Georgian Dream government also has its own concerns regarding Brussels.
“The statements by senior EU officials that interference in other countries is unacceptable are laughable. This is despite our numerous requests and demands; for years, they have been meddling in Georgia’s internal politics. It appears that such actions are incompatible with the role of a partner. It seems that, for Brussels, Georgia is neither a partner, nor an ally, nor a state, perhaps just a pawn where they can interfere. Through this statement, the EU essentially aligns itself with those countries that believe, ‘If I have the power, I can do whatever I want, interfere where I wish and act as I please.’
When it comes to America, international law comes to mind. We urge Brussels to abandon this ambiguous policy and to be consistent in respect of its partners. If there is to be restraint in interference, it must be applied everywhere, so that other nations have the opportunity to develop their own policies free from pressure and blackmail,” Makhashvili stated.
