MP Machavariani: Georgia keeps leading in EU and EC studies based on concrete facts and data

“When a study is grounded in specific facts and data, carried out by the European Union and the European Commission, Georgia consistently holds a leading position, often surpassing other candidate member states. In many instances, even surpassing EU and NATO member countries, particularly in terms of justice,” stated MP Levan Machavariani, a member of the parliamentary majority.

With this remark, Machavariani responded to a report published by the European Research Centre for Anti-corruption and State-building (ERCAS) concerning the causes and trends of corruption risks across European nations.

“A clear example of this is that, regardless of how many cases were brought before the Strasbourg Court, cases that were purportedly labelled as politically motivated, we have won every single one. The Strasbourg Court has also affirmed that our justice system operates at a very high standard. Therefore, we are not at all surprised by our leading positions in this index,” Machavariani added.

For context, the European Research Centre for Anti-corruption and State-building (ERCAS) recently published a report analysing the causes and trends of corruption risk across European countries. The report encompasses all 41 EU member and candidate countries and was commissioned by the European Union as part of the European Commission’s Research and Innovation Programme. According to the report, on a ten-point scale assessing judicial independence, Georgia scored 6.5 points, ranking 16th along with Lithuania and Portugal, placing it within the top 20 in Europe.
