MP Levan Makhashvili: Those who push for instability, blackmail us, and shield radicals can never be considered true friends of Georgia
“In recent days, we have witnessed yet another coordinated, baseless assault on Georgia. The latest documents emerging from the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which some are trying to force upon us under the guise of progress, are, in reality, a direct blueprint for those radical forces whose sole objective is to tear down the very foundations of our country,” declared MP Levan Makhashvili, member of the parliamentary majority and Chairman of the European Integration Committee, during a plenary session.
According to Makhashvili, these forces are waging war against everything and everyone held dear in Georgia; the pillars upon which our homeland and our people have stood for centuries.
“Let us examine these resolutions, reports, and statements that have been weaponised as manuals, and see what they truly want, what instructions they are issuing, and what they are targeting in Georgia.
They seek to dismantle our state institutions: law enforcement, the judiciary, state structures, elections, and transparency. Their goal is to discredit these institutions and erode their legal foundations, thereby sowing chaos, nihilism, and mistrust. They do not want a strong state, because a strong state possesses ironclad sovereignty, whereas they require a weak, malleable Georgia.
They seek to attack the cornerstone of our spirituality, our Mother Church, the very institution that preserved our language, our homeland, and our faith through the darkest centuries. Alongside the Church, they target the family, traditions, and identity. By assaulting the Church and our values, they want to break the backbone of our national identity. They know that as long as a Georgian’s spine is strengthened by faith and tradition, no foreign agenda can ever be imposed upon him.
They seek to target respected figures, our public authorities, intellectuals, scientists, artists, athletes, the older generation, and patriots; those whose word has always carried weight with the public, whose banners unite the nation, and who have contributed immeasurably to the building of our country. A deliberate smear campaign is underway to morally destroy, throw mud at, and devalue everyone who has served this country, leaving society without a moral compass.
They seek to target peace, the supreme achievement we are fighting tooth and nail to maintain amidst these perilous geopolitical storms. For them, peace is not a value; it is a challenge and an obstacle. They attempt to polarise society, stir up domestic animosity, and sow hatred, so that a fractured and weakened people can easily fall victim to foreign interests,” the majority MP stated.
Levan Makhashvili noted that these resolutions do not reflect the will or interests of the Georgian people. Instead, he described them as short-term noise dictated by the context of the war in Ukraine and driven by geopolitical opportunism; noise that will inevitably subside over time while the country firmly maintains its course.
“This brings us to the fundamental question we must confront: Can the authors of such documents truly be called friends of Georgia? The answer is unequivocally no. A true friend respects your choices, your culture, and your security. Anyone who pushes you towards instability, blackmails you, shields radicals, and attempts to punish you for maintaining peace in your own country can never be a true friend of Georgia.
Our response to this unjust political clamour will be united, calm, and resolute: Georgia will never again become a pawn in someone else’s political games, nor a casualty of grand geopolitical egos. Standing shoulder to shoulder with our people, we will safeguard a peaceful and dignified future for our country,” Levan Makhashvili concluded.
