MP Kadagishvili: Venice Commission aimed for non-political conclusions, yet delivers political preambles
“What we have been observing over the past year is a process of active dismantling of the existing so-called international order. This process, as always, is preceded by a certain erosion, including in international relations and in upholding the principles of international law,” stated MP Irakli Kadagishvili, a member of Georgian Dream.
According to him, the Venice Commission was established specifically to produce purely legal conclusions, free from any political bias, regarding whether laws comply with the constitution and international standards.
“We have observed that decisions were frequently confined to political preambles, with the juridical and legal aspects of their conclusions effectively overshadowed by political considerations. This, in fact, is a direct result of the internal erosion that has been affecting various international organisations over recent years. If their decisions were grounded in solid legal principles, one could argue they carry legal weight. However, if they are merely political statements from the Venice Commission, then they hold no real value whatsoever,” stated Kadagishvili.
For reference, U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a presidential memorandum providing for the United States’ withdrawal from 66 international organisations. Among these organisations is the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission.
