MP Gabunia: No legal or political basis for suspending visa-free travel; they aim at punishing Georgian people

“There are no legal or political grounds for bringing the issue of suspending visa-free travel with Georgia onto the agenda,” stated MP Giorgi Gabunia, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament’s Culture Committee, in response to the upcoming publication of the EU enlargement report on November 4.

According to Gabunia, the real aim behind this manoeuvre is to punish the Georgian people for their differing political views.

“The discussions they have initiated are solely a means of punishing the Georgian people. Up to now, Georgia has fulfilled all its obligations, and there are no outstanding issues in this regard. We should wait and see what follows.

Regarding sanctions, the actions of certain countries, particularly the Baltic states, are driven by their own political interests. Their specific agenda is closely tied to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The Georgian government has prevented what they sought to achieve within our country. It is fulfilling its obligations honestly and firmly, and there are no questions about that. I am confident that pragmatic policies will ultimately prevail within the European Union,” Gabunia concluded.
