MP Bitadze: Georgia plays vital role in connecting Europe and Asia’s energy markets

“Georgia plays a crucial role in linking the energy markets of Europe and Asia. A key component of this effort is the Black Sea Submarine Cable project, which will connect Georgia to European energy systems and enhance energy security,” stated Maia Bitadze, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment Protection and Natural Resources, at the Energy Community Parliamentary Plenary in Brussels.

Bitadze emphasized the strategic importance of transforming Georgia’s energy sector toward renewable sources in the context of the country’s EU integration.

“As a nation with significant potential for renewable energy generation, Georgia is gradually aligning its national energy policy with EU legislation and standards. The energy and climate national plan, adopted by the Georgian parliament in 2024, outlines ambitious goals for 2030: a 47% reduction in thermal emissions and an increase in renewable energy utilization,” she explained.

Additionally, Bitadze announced that Georgia will implement a Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system to assess environmental impacts.

She noted that the Environment Protection and Natural Resources Committee is actively working on the Law on Climate Change, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

Since becoming a member of the Energy Community in 2017, Georgia is set to assume the chairmanship of the Community in 2025.
