Mountaineer Nikoloz Paliani dies during Ushba expedition

Nikoloz Paliani, an IFMGA Certified Mountain Guide and well-known Georgian mountaineer, has tragically died during an expedition to Mount Ushba in the Svaneti region.

The Emergency Management Service confirmed that Paliani was among a group of four climbers attempting to summit the challenging peak when he fell from a high altitude.

“A search and rescue operation was promptly launched, with a Border Police helicopter dispatched from Tbilisi. Three climbers were safely evacuated from an altitude of 3,600 meters, while the deceased man has been transferred to Mestia,” the Emergency Management Service stated.

Georgian mountain sports community expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Nikoloz Paliani during his expedition to Ushba. He was an exceptional mountaineer and guide who played a key role in the development of Georgian tourism.

His passing is a great loss for his family, friends, Svaneti, and the entire sports and tourism community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, colleagues, the people of Svaneti, and all of Georgia.
