MIA: Nearly 60 cases brought before courts since establishment of anti-hate speech division; seven concluded with final rulings
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, since June 1, 2026, the Ministry’s Anti-Hate Speech Division has brought nearly 60 cases before the common courts, of which preliminary hearings have been scheduled in 30. Seven cases have thus far been concluded with final rulings.
The Ministry further notes that the first case brought before the common courts by the Anti-Hate Speech Division was heard on June 11, 2026, by the Bolnisi District Court, though a ruling has yet to be announced. The first formal decision in any of the referred cases was handed down on June 12, 2026, by the Oni Magistrates’ Court.
“Accordingly, reports circulated by certain media outlets, claiming that the first case was heard today and concerned a violation committed against Nino Tsilosani, are factually incorrect. The Division’s purpose is to ensure the monitoring and proactive identification of publicly disseminated statements that are degrading or offensive to human dignity, or that constitute hate speech, and which bear the hallmarks of an administrative offence under the Code of Administrative Offences of Georgia, and to pursue the appropriate legal response to such statements in accordance with Georgian law. Cases submitted by the Anti-Hate Speech Division to the common courts continue to be heard daily, and the public will be kept informed of ongoing proceedings and their outcomes on a rolling basis,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs stated.
