MEP Neuhoff: ESN Group considers EU Commission report on Georgia as politically biased
“We firmly reject the draft of the 2023-2024 commission reports on Georgia, a text that not only displays clear political bias but also contains several provisions that are legally and institutionally unacceptable under EU and international law,” stated MEP Hans Neuhoff, Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) Group, at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament after the vote on the report on Georgia.
According to him, the Alternative für Germany does not agree with the three main points of the draft.
“In the capacity of the shadow rapporteur, I would announce the submission of the minority position on behalf of the ESN Group according to Rule 56.4 of the rules of procedure. With the permission of the chair, let me submit, for the committee’s attention, our three main points.
We reject point 5 of the draft, which demands personal sanctions without prior legal proceedings, thus violating the fundamental principles of the rule of law and individual rights. Moreover, the call to extend such sanctions to family members constitutes a form of collective punishment, a blatant breach of both EU fundamental rights, standards and international legal norms, prohibiting guilt by association.
We reject point 8, which calls for the non-recognition of Georgia’s democratically elected government and the unilateral designation of a preferred political figure, a blatant violation of the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states as protected by the UN Charter.
We reject point 10, which seeks to bypass the EU’s unanimity requirement for foreign policy decisions, thereby undermining the legal order of the union itself. So, summing up, we firmly reject the draft of the 2023-2024 commission reports on Georgia, a text that not only displays clear political bias but also contains several provisions that are legally and institutionally unacceptable under EU and international law,” Hans Neuhoff stated.
