MEP Michael Gahler: if Orban is blocking EU measures, executives from remaining member states should take measures against Ivanishvili's regime

“if Orban is blocking the EU measures, then there are kind of coordination still from executives of remaining member states that could take measures against the regime, particularly against Ivanishvili,” said MEP Michael Gahler at the ordinary meeting of the EP’s Foreign Affairs Committee.

According to the MEP, the Georgian people do not stand with Russia and they do not see their perspective with Russia.

“I fully share the draft of MEP Rasa Juknevičienė. I think we should see the energy of the Georgian people to demonstrate after so many days, days and evenings. They show the Georgian and EU flags and throughout the country, you see a lot of Ukrainian flags.

So, they show where they stand in this war. They do not stand with Russia and they do not see their perspective with Russia contrary and apparently to the Ivanishvili regime. We should assess what is on the timelines in the Congress, something prepared with the bipartisan approach. Also, what the British have taken as measures and some individual member states.

I reiterate that if Orban is blocking the EU measures, then there are kinds of coordination still from executives of the remaining member states that could take measures against the regime, particularly against Ivanishvili. If I am not mistaken, he is also a French citizen and perhaps, he has some assets in France and some measures could be taken.

Apart from that, we definitely need to remain supportive, with the means that we have, especially when USAID is not active any more in our means. Therefore, we should use the European Endowment for Democracy and national funds from our countries to help democrats there,” he said.
