Marija Pejčinović Burić - Georgia making good progress and preparing to fulfil its first important commitment - to take over the chairmanship of CoE Committee of Ministers

“From my perspective, everything is going well and Georgia is preparing to fulfil its first important commitment – to take over the chairmanship of Council of Europe’s (CoE) Committee of Ministers,”- the Secretary General of the CoE Marija Pejčinović Burić said after the joint meeting with the Georgian Foreign Minister, Davit Zalkaliani.

As Marija Pejčinović Burić said, her visit coincides with two important dates: first, when Georgia became a member of the Council of Europe on April 27, 1999, and second, 70th Anniversary of the Council of Europe.

“The purpose of Council of Europe is to maintain the unity of the member states and to ensure peace by establishing high standards in the field of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

Georgia is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the Council of Europe. From my perspective, everything is going well and Georgia is preparing to fulfil its first important commitment – to take over the chairmanship of Council of Europe’s (CoE) Committee of Ministers.

I would like to thank Georgian Foreign Minister for the excellent hosting,” – Marija Pejčinović Burić stated.

The Secretary General of the CoE added that the Council of Europe will discuss all important issues for Georgia, including the situation in the occupied territories.

At this point, I can also express my concern about some security issues and the humanitarian situation in these areas. I hope that a consolidated report will help to calm the situation and help resolve this situation peacefully. This is important for Georgia and for Europe as well,”- Maria Peinchinovic Buric said.

Georgia will take over the chairmanship of Council of Europe’s (CoE) Committee of Ministers for a six-month term starting November 27.

The Secretary General of the CoE Marija Pejčinović Burić has arrived in Georgia in connection with Georgia’s upcoming chairmanship.

Presentation of the coin issued in connection with the 70th anniversary of the CoE and the 20th jubilee of Georgia’s CoE membership as well as the action plan of Georgia in the Council of Europe for 2020-2023 will be held within the framework of the visit.

The plan was prepared with active cooperation of the Georgian side and aims at bringing human rights protection, democracy and supremacy of law in line with the European standards.

This is the first time when Georgia heads Council of Europe Committee of Ministers.

The chairmanship will be passed from France to Georgia in Strasbourg.
