Mamuka Bakhtadze - Situation across occupied regions of Georgia is a “humanitarian disaster”
Prime Minister of Georgia Mamuka Bakhtadze assesses the current situation across the occupied regions of Georgia, Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, as a “humanitarian disaster”.
Prime Minister said at the conference organized by the “Progressive Alliance” at Rooms Hotel Tbilisi on Friday that 120 000 people lived in Tskhinvali regions before the August war, while the number is decreased to 20 000 currently. As for Abkhazia, the number of the population has been decreased from 500 000 to 12 000.
“We have very painful challenges. 20% of Georgian territories are still occupied by Russia. There is nothing, but the humanitarian catastrophe on these territories. There were 120,000 people in Tskhinvali region before the war, unfortunately, currently there are less than 20 000 people, including 7,000 Russian military servicemen, in this region. This is a very painful challenge.
Unfortunately, we have the same situation in Abkhazia, too. Before the war the number of its population was over 500,000, and today, there are less than 120,000 people in this region. Our answer to this most painful challenge is peace and development, building a democratic institution and creating a space where all people will be able to realize their talents and possibilities in our common homeland. But naturally, we need our friends on this path and we know that you are standing steady next to Georgian democracy,” Bakhtadze addressed the conference.
