Majority leader: Nothing stirs up anti-European sentiments in society than portraying Saakashvili as modernization symbol

“Nothing else stirs up and revives anti-European sentiments in the Georgian society more than presenting Saakashvili as a symbol of modernization,” said Mamuka Mdinaradze, leader of the parliamentary majority in Batumi, the Adjara region.

According to Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Georgian people will not accept portraying jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili positively. He called on the European colleagues, “Saakashvili’s heated lobbyists” to take that into account when they “fit in Saakashvili’s issue in any resolution.”

“Georgia and the vast majority of its society know that Saakashvili was a symbol of murder, torture, rape, business racketeering, loss of dignity, suppression of freedom of speech, and not modernization, its PR campaign based on lies undermines European sentiments in Georgia,” he said.

The European Parliament on February 28 adopted two resolutions in support of Georgia. MEP Anna Fotyga said that at her request, an amendment had been made to the resolution calling on Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili to pardon Mikheil Saakashvili.
