Majoritarian MP Candidate of National Movement believes that 2 scientists detained into Davit Gareji case will be released from illegal imprisonment

Nika Melia, Majoritarian (single mandate) MP Candidate of National Movement in Gldani district of Tbilisi said he believed that 2 scientists, Iveri Melashvili and Natalia Ilychova, detained into the case of Davit Gareji case would be released from illegal imprisonment after the defeat of Georgian Dream ruling party in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

“The authorities broke their own moral record when they arrested two well-known and patriot scientists just because they are losing elections with the opposition,” Melia said. According to Melia, Bidzina Ivanishvili, Chairman of Georgian Dream tried to persuade the public that the previous government was selling Georgia’s territories.

Iveri Melashvili and Natalia Ilychova, two persons accused of acting against the territories of Georgia detained into the case of Davit Gareji monastery complex, were imposed imprisonment on October 8.

The Prosecutor’s Office arrested Iveli Melashvili, Head of the Border Relations Service of Department of Neighboring Countries and Natalia Ilychova, Chief Inspector of the Land Border Defense Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia on October 7 as part of the ongoing investigation into the case of David Gareji.

The investigation was launched on August 17, 2020, based on written information received from the Ministry of Defense of Georgia regarding the activities of the Government Commission on Delimitation and Demarcation of State Borders of Georgia. The two detainees do not plead guilty.
