Major slope stabilisation and landslide mitigation works to begin on Akhaldaba road

“A major slope stabilisation project is to launch on the road to Akhaldaba in the Vake District, aimed at securing the route, preventing active landslide risks, and ensuring safe passage for local residents,” Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced during today’s municipal government meeting.

The Mayor noted that the project will implement critical engineering and preventative measures across an unstable hillside spanning 13,000 square metres.

“To guarantee safety on this stretch of the road, we will construct piled reinforced concrete retaining walls. The slope will also be reinforced with 2,060 ground anchors, alongside galvanised steel mesh and high-tensile wire rope, which will eliminate the risk of rockfalls and further landslide activity. The plans also include a new drainage channel, which is vital for diverting surface run-off and further securing the hillside stability. In the final phase, comprehensive roadworks will be carried out, including full asphalt resurfacing and the installation of modern steel crash barriers, to modernise the transport infrastructure,” the Tbilisi Mayor stated.

The stabilisation works, delivered by Tbilisi City Hall’s Municipal Department of Infrastructure Development, are due to begin in the coming days and will take eight months to complete.
