Luke Coffey - Ten years after NATO Bucharest summit, its time for effective steps
Ten years after the NATO Bucharest summit, its time for effective steps, – Luke Coffey, the political observer of Heritage Foundation said in an exclusive interview with the First Channel.
As he noted, after the Bucharest summit during last 10 years he only listens to one and the same discussion on how Georgia has to become a member of NATO and 10 years after it’s time for creative approaches.
As for the Heritage Foundation’s publication, where he noted that for joining NATO Georgian officials do not rule out compromise on Abkhazia and Tskhinvali issue, Luke Coffey says:
“I could not say that someone is actively discussing this possibility in the government of Georgia, but I can say that I have visited Georgia many times, I have met with different government officials and have personally heard about this from different senior officials. It will be a very realistic decision for Georgia to join NATO. I want to underline that this is just my suggestion. I would never offer you to refuse from territorial integrity. I just say that Georgia has a condition of non-use of force, then why is the guarantee of the 5th article of NATO for the occupied territories necessary?” – Luke Coffey said.
According to him there are countries in the world that are guided by the similar model. As an example, he spoke about the Falkland and Guam Islands.
