People have the fundamental right to express protest, but without violence, otherwise, the police, the security forces are obliged to maintain peace without using excessive force, – Louisa Vinton, UNDP Head in Georgia made this statement in connection with yesterday’s confrontation in the Pankisi Gorge.

As noted by Louisa Vinton, the balance should be maintained between the infrastructure construction and population attempts to retain untouched green nature.

“We are very concerned about the situation. We are glad that the confrontation has been replaced by negotiations.  We expect positive results.  As for the hydropower plant, hydropower it is related to environmental impacts. This impact should be assessed and measured. It is necessary to talk to the public about this issue before launching any construction. The balance should be maintained between the infrastructure construction and population attempts to retain untouched green nature”, – Louisa Vinton stated.

Clashes took place in the Pankisi  Gorge yesterday. Protesters threw stones and sticks at the special force units. The law enforcers used tear gas and rubber bullets. Locals of Pankisi Gorge protested against the construction of the Hydro Power Plant Khadori 3.
