Residents staged a protest in the village of Gulgula, located in Telavi Municipality. Local people are demanding the decommissioning and relocation of a landfill situated three kilometres from the village.

Demonstrators attempted to block the road leading to the landfill site, but police officers deployed to the scene prevented them from doing so.

According to locals, unsanitary conditions at the site mean they are unable to open their windows or let their children play outside. They added that a borehole supplying drinking water to the village of Gulgula is situated near the landfill. Locals state that both the water and air quality are negatively affecting their health.

Several tonnes of household waste from various Kakheti municipalities are dumped daily at the Gulgula landfill.

Representatives from local government and the Solid Waste Management Company met with the protesters at the scene.
