Levan Murusidze: Baseless decisions of some European politicians not to influence Georgian court

“Baseless decisions of some European politicians will not influence our activities. Georgian court serves Georgian people,” said Judge Levan Murusidze, a member of the High Council of Justice (HCoJ).

As Murusidze noted, the parliamentary government in Georgia gave judges a higher quota in the High Council of Justice and protected the independence of judges through secret balloting.

“I believe that statements of politicians regarding sanctions from foreign countries are baseless and immoral. However, the court system remains calm. Court is the authority that serves the Georgian people, and baseless decisions of some European politicians and high officials will not influence our activities,” he said.

Responding to the question on expected sanctions, Murusidze said: “We do not attach much importance to this issue. We have responsibility only before our citizens and we try our best to be in the service of law and the judiciary. I would recommend those countries that speak about sanctions to mind their own courts.

When an international conference of judges is held, European Union judges speak about intimidation and pressure from their governments creating problems.

Here, in Georgia, the parliamentary government gave judges a higher quota in the High Council of Justice to elect their acceptable candidates through secret balloting. This protects the independence of judges. If we compare it to foreign states that impose sanctions on us, the executive branch there also interferes in judicial activities. Therefore, I would urge them to quit imposing sanctions in another country and mind their court systems,” he said.
