Lelo's Gegelia: U.S. statement confirms no cooperation with GD without meeting America's demands
“The U.S. (embassy’s) statement is a clear indication that there will be no normalisation, recognition, or cooperation with the Georgian Dream regime unless America’s demands are met,” said Grigol Gegelia, a member of the Lelo party.
According to him, the United States has specific expectations for the Georgian Dream government.
“The U.S. statement further confirms that America has very particular demands for the Georgian Dream regime. As the embassy has repeatedly emphasised, if these are fulfilled, the United States may be interested in resetting relations.
Conversely, if these demands are not fulfilled, America has no intention of normalising relations. Today, the embassy reiterated once again that without meeting these requirements, there would be no normalisation, recognition, or cooperation with this regime.
However, it is also evident that Secretary of State Rubio is very clearly expressing optimism about the Georgian nation. He notes that the prospects for cooperation are substantial, provided that the processes are correct and the Georgian Dream regime cooperates in fulfilling the US’s expectations in democratic and other critical areas,” Gegelia added.
The U.S. Embassy in Georgia issued a statement indicating that, at the request of Secretary of State Rubio, Ambassador Dunnigan sought a meeting with Bidzina Ivanishvili on May 22. However, Ivanishvili declined to meet with the ambassador.
