Lelo's Gegelia: Instead of settling with Trump, GD receives a heavy blow from the US Congress

“The Act, supported by the majority of the House of Representatives, instructs the U.S. Department of State, in coordination with the Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of Defence, to produce a classified report examining the extent of Russian and Chinese intelligence penetration and the intersection of their influence in Georgia,” said Grigol Gegelia, a member of the Lelo Party.

According to Gegelia, this confirms that the US is deepening its strategic interest in Georgia and at the same time realizing that under the “Dream” regime, Georgia has become a locality for hostile regimes.

“The regime propaganda pledged that it would normalize relations with the U.S. However, we see that the regime is perceived as the source of security risks. The Act was supported by the majority of the House of Representatives from both parties.

The assessment from House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast that the selection of a Chinese Consortium in the development of the Anaklia Deep-Sea Port project poses a threat and risk to Georgian and U.S. national interests was noteworthy.

This is one of the highest-level statements regarding Anaklia and the Middle Corridor. This is yet another confirmation that the U.S is deeply interested in the development of the Middle Corridor and Anaklia, Georgia’s inclusion in the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), the security of the Black Sea Basin, and the economic and political stability of the region.

Significantly,  a similar provision to the new act passed by the House of Representatives was included in the National Defense Authorization Act, through which lawmakers practically directly instruct the US executive branch, the White House, the Pentagon, and other institutions to take special control of the situation in Georgia.

The Act instructs the U.S. Department of State to outline a five-year strategy, which will assess US funding and a possible review of military, trade and investment ties. Inclusion of an identical provision into the National Defense Authorization Act, which is a so-called must-pass legislative package, increases the chances that it will soon become law,” he said.

U.S. House of Representatives passed the Countering China’s Control of the Caucasus Act on June 8. It requires the Secretary of State, in coordination with the Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of Defence, to produce a classified report examining the extent of Russian and Chinese intelligence penetration and the intersection of their influence in Georgia.

Congressman Joe Wilson said that “the illegitimate Georgian Dream regime is currently in the process of selling the country to the Chinese Communist Party and war criminal Putin and Iran, which is against the will of the Georgian people and the interests of the United States.”
