Lelo’s Gegelia highlights ongoing informal talks and need for unified opposition strategy
According to Grigol Gegelia, a member of Lelo-Strong Georgia, informal discussions between Lelo and Zurab Japaridze have already taken place, with many more to follow.
Gegelia emphasised the importance of reaching a consensus on a unified opposition strategy, noting that such an agreement would underpin the existence of a united front.
“Obviously, informal meetings have occurred, and many more are planned. Our party’s position is quite straightforward. We must agree on a common strategy. If we establish this, the unity format will also be maintained.
Without a shared strategic vision, there can be no real unity. For us, the substance is paramount. If we have a mutually agreed strategic plan, that’s potentially promising and positive. However, as history has shown, first there must be a shared vision, and only then can discussions about unity, including a common list and shared candidates, take place,” Gegelia explained.
Gegelia also clarified that he did not personally attend the recent meeting with Zurab Japaridze and is not privy to its details.
“I am confident that various issues were discussed. Our party’s stance is that we need to agree on a common strategic outlook, including methods of struggle and tactics. If such an agreement is reached, it will pave the way for a more coordinated and compelling unity. We have consistently taken steps towards unity. Once we agree on a strategy, discussions about a potential common candidate and a list become feasible.
But if our views diverge, for instance, if I believe we should participate in the elections and someone else does not, that unity cannot be realised. These matters should be settled in advance to avoid public disputes later,” Gegelia concluded.
