Lelo's Elisashvili expects GD to ban two coalitions to sow division in opposition, but not Lelo-Strong Georgia
“We anticipate that they [GD] will ban two coalitions or parties but leave our coalition untouched to deepen divisions within the opposition,” said Aleko Elisashvili, a member of Lelo-Strong Georgia, when commenting on the constitutional lawsuit filed by the Georgian Dream party.
According to him, the Georgian Dream will unquestionably utilise all available mechanisms and fight to the fullest extent.
“We will fight legally. We are aware of the environment we operate in, an unjust one. The courts, in reality, function more as bureaux for executing orders rather than impartial arbiters. We will resist as much as possible. We will stand firm for ourselves and our coalition. We possess the knowledge and education to do so. We simply expect, and believe, that they will ban two coalitions or parties but not ours to sow further divisions within the opposition.
One of the scenarios we are considering is that they will escalate the confrontation. The rest of the opposition start and end with insulting us now, and they will be given another pretext. Of course, we will utilise both internal legal avenues and external mechanisms. We will deploy everything at our disposal,” said Aleko Elisashvili.
The Georgian Dream faction, along with the political groups People’s Power and European Socialists, has jointly prepared a constitutional lawsuit, requesting the recognition of the activities of three political parties as unconstitutional and their subsequent banning. These parties are: the Citizens’ Political Union “Unity – National Movement”; the Citizens’ Political Union “Coalition for Change, Gvaramia, Melia, Girchi, Droa”; and the Citizens’ Political Union “Strong Georgia – Lelo, For the People, For Freedom.”
