Lelo's Datunashvili: Rising prices in Georgia linked to corruption, high taxes and pligopolies

According to Tazo Datunashvili, a member of Lelo, the party has been raising concerns about rising prices in Georgia for the second consecutive year. Datunashvili attributes the price increases to high taxes, widespread corruption, and the influence of oligopolies and monopolies.

“Price increases in the country are driven by excessive money printing, for which the National Bank is responsible, and by high taxes, which fall under the responsibility of the Parliament and the Government of Georgia.
Corruption also plays a significant role, affecting the cost of virtually all goods and services. The ruling party, Georgian Dream, bears responsibility, as do harmful oligopolies and monopolies, such as those in the wheat sector represented by Goderdzi Changseliani.

We have been warning about rising prices for two years, emphasizing that they have reached unsustainable levels, outpacing economic growth. As a result, salaries cannot keep up. The government should reduce or eliminate taxes on basic products, invest more in agriculture, and actively support businesses in this sector, rather than wasting billions ineffectively.

The government’s response so far has been to pursue arrests, prosecutions, and stricter enforcement. Citizens must judge for themselves which approach is more reasonable: addressing the underlying economic issues or relying solely on punitive measures,” Datunashvili stated.
