Kutaisi International University granted affiliate university status by Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences

Kutaisi International University (KIU) has signed a cooperation agreement with the world-leading, Canada-based Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, officially granting KIU affiliate university status with the renowned research centre.

This partnership will help KIU expand its presence in the international scientific and educational community, collaborate on joint research, and contribute to advancing mathematical and exact sciences.

The Executive Director and Rector of Kutaisi International University, Vakhtang Tsagareli, expressed his gratitude to the Director of the Fields Institute, Professor Deirdre Haskell, for this collaboration and discussed future strategic plans. The high-level meeting was attended by KIU Chancellor Levan Kopaliani, the Head of the School of Mathematics, Professor Ramaz Botchorishvili, and KIU Professor Aleksandre Meskhi, a Corresponding Member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences and Head of the newly established Giorgi Nikoladze Research Centre.

The agreement reached between the two institutions encompasses several key areas of academic cooperation: connecting Georgian students and researchers with the international scientific community; launching and executing joint research projects; organising international conferences, seminars, and educational symposia; enhancing the university’s capacity to attract foreign scientists, researchers, and students, thereby strengthening modern scientific disciplines within Georgia.

Under the terms of the agreement, Kutaisi International University’s name and logo will feature on the Fields Institute’s official website, newsletters, and annual reports. Such international exposure will enhance KIU’s institutional profile, showcasing its scientific and academic capabilities on the global stage.

This affiliate status is of paramount importance to the newly founded Giorgi Nikoladze Research Centre based at KIU. The partnership will enable the centre to forge links with world-leading scientists, participate in global research initiatives, and cultivate a supportive environment for young Georgian researchers.

The first practical step of this collaboration has already been taken. In partnership with the Giorgi Nikoladze Research Centre and its affiliate universities, the Fields Institute has scheduled a regional summer school at KIU for this September, titled “Mathematics for Artificial Intelligence”. The organising committee for the event includes Professor Deirdre Haskell and Professor Aleksandre Meskhi.

Kutaisi International University continues to expand its international partner network and deepen collaborations with the world’s leading educational and research institutions. This ongoing development directly supports KIU’s core mission: to foster the growth of international-standard education, science, research, and innovation within Georgia.
