Kakheti Governor confirms bulk of flood debris cleared from disaster epicentre, cellar pump-outs underway

The State Representative in the Kakheti Region, Platon Kalmakhelidze, has announced that the bulk of the debris washed down by the extreme weather in Telavi has now been cleared from the epicentre of the disaster, with efforts ongoing to pump out flooded basements.

“The primary mass of debris has now been removed from the epicentre of the disaster. Cleanup operations remain in full swing. At the Telavisakhevi headworks and in the direction of the villages of Gulgula and Vardisubani, protective gabions are being constructed. This is to safeguard agricultural lands along a critical two-kilometre stretch from further threat.

In addition, response crews are on the ground and continue to pump out and clear flooded commercial properties and the basements of residential apartment blocks. I should also note that the water supply has been disrupted in three of the municipality’s villages: Tsinandali, Kisiskhevi, and Vardisubani. Work is currently underway at the headworks to repair the damage inflicted by the natural disaster and fully restore the water supply to these villages.

On Vardoshvili Street in Telavi, specialists from the Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau have completed an initial assessment. As soon as the structural analysis and final report are ready, the findings will be shared with the local business owners and the wider public,” Kalmakhelidze stated.
